Grand Final of the Global Security Challenge 2011

The 6th Global Security Challenge took place at PitchLive on the 25th of October in the Business Design Centre in London, UK.

Opening in February 2011, the 2011 Global Security Challenge attracted well over 200 entries from more than 30 countries around the world. The competition, supported by TSWG and BAE Systems, is now in its sixth year.

About

The Global Security Challenge (GSC) is an annual competition seeking the latest innovations in security technology from startups and SMEs around the world. Entries are initally judged by global security experts in an online phase, enabled by OmniCompete's competition platform. The top five startups & SMEs from each region are invited to pitch and participate in judges Q&A sessions in six regional events, and the winners of the regional events are invited to compete in the Grand Final, held in London each Autumn.

Mission

The mission of the GSC is to stimulate technological innovations that make airports, cities and enterprises safer without encroaching on civil liberties. It provides a valuable launching pad for security innovation - each year a $500,000 USD prize fund is awarded to entrepreneurs and researchers within the security technology field. 

 

 

Judging

Judging was carried out in three stages, namely online, regional and global final. In total, over 60 judges, including stakeholders from government, industry and academia carefully reviewed each entry and gave vital feedback not only to those that had progressed to the next round but also for those companies and ideas which did not qualify.

Prize

The Global Security Challenge has a total prize fund of $500,000. A $200,000 prize fund is awarded to the winning Startup and a $300,000 prize fund is awarded to the best SME.

Arktis Radiation Detectors developed a platform technology for detecting ionizing radiation. The technology's unique capabilities in the detection of fast neutrons and gamma radiation enable several novel applications in numerous vertical markets. Arktis Radiation Detectors Ltd is a Swiss high-tech start-up incorporated 2007 in Zurich, Switzerland. Arktis has invested four years of development to demonstrate and prove the merits of a technology originally developed by ETH Zurich for astro-particle physics experiments at the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN).

Global Security Challenge SME Winner www.agnitio.es

Agnito SL is concerned with developing advanced technology in order to identify individuals through voice recognition software. The advanced voice biometrics technology, allows identification, surveillance and precise ID verification using the voice. Filtering out specific and unique voice patterns, an individual can be recognised.

The technology has found applications in forensics and law enforcements, monitoring and surveillance in military and intelligence operations and remote voice recognition for call centres who use the technology as a way of unique password identification process.

CipherCloud provides award-winning cloud data encryption and tokenization solutions with innovative technology to protect sensitive data on-the-fly before it's sent to the cloud. The data will not be effected through that process and will make its way safely to any kind of cloud storage. The company was founded in 2010 by pioneers of the field of cloud computing security who follow their vision of eradicating concerns related to the cloud computing system.

C4 Security develops Fides a comprehensive system which elevates the reliability, safety and security of control systems. C4 Security provides SCADA penetration tests and offers services detecting security threats in IT systems as well as offering appropriate solutions for information warfare with intelligence and law enforcement agencies.

Defog/OFRI stands for (Observation through Fog and Haze Range Intensifier), providing a video surveillance solution that makes images clear and increase their reach. OFRI is initiated by IARD, Institute for Advanced R&D and is based in Israel. Their product offers a greatly enhanced image as well as sharpness and it is fully automatic and a capable real time sensing adaption.

Defensoft is provides a border security planning service helping to prevent threats, illegal immigration and crime. Security planners face a formidable challenge when designing defence arrays around airports, seaports, borders, military sites, oil and gas plants and other critical infrastructure. DefenSoft offers a revolutionary change in the way planning is accomplished and sets a new standard. The company offers analytical and planning tools, site modelling, analysis, and design services to perform layouts of territory and critical infrastructure sites.

EasySecured, based in India, Mubai, is a company offering online and information security solutions. They offer internet users a software that does not require remembering complex passwords and provides more secure way of surfing. Through the internet key users can (without a password) access their internet sites from several devises and can be assured that their internet data is save and secured. The software also helps to mitigate data theft and enhance information security without the high switching and support cost.

Eureka Aerospace is a high technology research and development firm concentrating on microwave and RF technologies, coupling them with advanced signal and image processing techniques. They are hoping to provide individual solutions to organisations in the public defence sector and to the private institutions. Their technology promises useful in a variety of settings, such as the military combat zone, the streets of urban areas and their policing force and private buildings.

InView Technology Corporation was founded in 2009 by experienced entrepreneurs to commercialize the Compressive Sensing (CS) technology which InView has licensed exclusively from Rice University. InView  provides innovative cameras and hyper-spectral imagers that employ advanced computational imaging. InView's innovative computational imaging technology can be employed across the electromagnetic spectrum, including the ultra-violet, visual, infrared and terahertz wavebands..

Ipsotek is an experienced developer of video analytic solutions. They are known for several new innovations over the years such as: including scenario-based detection, virtual perspective and the integration of combined sound and Video Analytics. Ipsotek offer CCTV surveillance performance without an increase in manpower. The systems can be applied to existing CCTV cameras or new systems, customized to individual needs.

Radius Health develop a lightweight x-ray emitter employing the Microemitter Array X-rays (MAX) technology; an x-ray source on a chip capable of delivering the same x-ray spectrum as traditional x-ray sources. The team at Radius Health have developed a particle source that will deliver x-ray beams from microfabricated structures enabling MAX to be produced using the current generation of semiconductor foundry processes; The advantage being that the MAX source will produce diagnostic x-rays without the need for fragile vacuum tubes and bulky, expensive power electronics or radioactive materials.

TracMap NZ is providing leading technology in the GPS sector for search & rescue and surveillence aircraft. Its goal is to make the use of these vehicles saver and more precise. TracMap systems promise to deliver a 20% increase in productivity. The products are easy to use and offer a robust and waterproof package which also sends back positions and terrain data; a feature that could save lives in an emergency.
