Innovation can come from anywhere!!
Here at the GSC we are partial to the occasional curry but never thought it might be a very useful security tool!
It’s already well known that the spice used in curries (turmeric) can be helpful in medicine for its anti-cancer and anti-oxidant properties but who would have thought it could be used in the task of detecting explosives.
Well that is just what researchers from the American Physical Society believe! New research from them suggests that it could be used in an affordable way with cheaper explosive detectors.
It just proves that innovation really can come from anywhere and many ideas that at first sight don’t appear as though they could have security uses quite often can. So, all you innovators out there, think twice about the project you are working on, what other uses could it have?
Could you enter the GSC with it? Why not, remember the entry deadline is only weeks away so get a move on.

Attention Investors!!
Here at the Global Security Challenge we like to keep in touch with all of our past finalists and try wherever possible to assist them as they grow and become more successful.
We are delighted when they do well and love to hear news of their success’s.
We also like to give practical help if possible and this is one instance where we can do just that.
Biogy Inc were the winners of our West Coast USA regional final in 2010 and they have developed a product called ‘True Identity’ that transforms the concept of secure identification – in fact Dr John Morgan the Deputy Director of TSWG was impressed enough to say “it is the disruptive solution to cyber crime”.
As a result of the recent RSA breach, Biogy is in licensing and strategic partnership discussions with some of the largest security companies in the world.
Click on this link to find out a little more about the product and information about Biogy.
As I have mentioned before, Cyber Security investment is at an all time high at the moment with investors worldwide seeing it as a very positive sector.
If you have been a previous finalists of the GSC and would like us to publicise your call for funds let us know and we will do our utmost to assist.

HOSDB a roaring success!!
Just back from the UK HOSDB show held at Farnborough.
Amongst some outstanding products and innovations there were some very interesting briefings including one in particular from Owen Pengally, Deputy Director of Policy from the Office of Cyber Security and Information Assurance. He outlined where he will be spending the £650 million the UK government has committed over the next 4 years.
85% of the cash will be spent on Defending the networks and the critical Cyber infrastructure with the remaining sum allocated to combating cyber crime.
Cyber Security is absolutely a key area for many other European countries too with Germany setting up a National Cyber Response Centre and a National Cyber Security Council that will coordinate the government’s responses to cyber security threats and share information about threats with federal agencies and the private sector.
We shall be launching our 2011 Cyber Security Challenge very shortly so if you are currently working on a new innovation in this area don’t just enter the Global Security Challenge but enter the Cyber Challenge as well!!
Keep a look out on our website for more details.

Answers to some Questions.
Each year at around this time the GSC entrants to the GSC almost always ask the same couple of questions, for example:
1) Do we ask for a stake in the company if you win?
2) Is it really FREE to enter?
The answer to the two questions above is
1) Not at all, not a single percentage, royalty or otherwise and
2) yes!
At all stages of the competition, from the opening round to the various regional finals and then onto the Grand Final – completely free, Zilch, gratis, complimentary, I could say more but I think you have already got the message!
Go to the FAQ section on the left of the menu for more common questions.
Remember the deadline to enter is 31st May 2011.

Don’t forget the entry deadline for the 2011 Global Security Challenge is 31st May 2011. With the terrible events in Japan highlighting the need for advances in security and disaster recovery are you working on an innovation that could have helped? The remit of the GSC is very wide enter now.
If you have an innovation in the area of Cyber Security then by all means enter the GSC but keep a close eye on our website as we hope to open the 3rd Cyber Security Challenge soon.
The two challenges have different judging criteria but there is no bar on entering both challenges – and even winning both!!
