OmniCompete runs several competitions in the security sector, awarding over US$500,000 annually in grants and prizes to innovative security companies. Previous winners and finalists have subsequently generated over US $124 million in investment and acquisitions.

Current competitions

1. Global Security Challenge 2011

The 6th annual GSC is open for applications until 31st May 2011. GSC is sponsored by the Technical Support Working Group (TSWG) and BAE Systems. The GSC is divided into two categories, namely best security startup and best security SME.

The best security startup will receive :

The best security SME will receive:

  • $300,000 USD support sponsored by TSWG of US Department of Defense
  • Mentorship by Chris Hodges, Director at Carlyle Group (tbc)
  • Unparalleled networking opportunity with government officials and industry leaders
  •  Invaluable publicity

Previous security competitions

1.  IFSEC Future of Security Competition 2011

Ending at IFSEC, the world's largest annual security exposition, this competition aims to find the next generation of security innovations.   

The winner of this year's IFSEC Future of Security Competition will receive:

  • $10,000 cash award 
  • Mentorship from industry leaders
  • Exposure at IFSEC 2011
  • “Stamp of Approval” from expert panel of judges

The submission period for IFSEC 2011 has now closed, but crowd-voting is ongoing. The finalists have created 90-second video pitches, which can viewed online. Anyone can vote once and voting is free. Crowd-voting closes 17th May 2011.

2. INSTINCT Technology Demonstrator 3: Augmented Reality (2011)

INSTINCT is a cross-departmental programme led by the Office for Security and Counter Terrorism. Technology Demonstrators are programmes designed to seek out, test and showcase new technologies.

TD3 focused on augmented reality and was led by Logica, with OmniCompete providing competition support.

In lieu of choosing a winner, the top entries were invited to the showcase event.

3. INSTINCT Technology Demonstrator 2: Aviation Security (2010)

INSTINCT is a cross-departmental programme led by the Office for Security and Counter Terrorism. Technology Demonstrators are programmes designed to seek out, test and showcase new technologies. 

TD2 focused on aviation security and was led by Thales, with OmniCompete providing competition support. TD2 was won by Human Recognition Systems (HRS).

4. Global Security Challenge 2010

The 5th annual GSC was supported by the Technical Support Working Group (TSWG), BAE Systems, Smiths Detection and Accenture. The GSC is divided into two categories, namely best security startup and best security SME.

mPedigree (our first ever African winner) was named best security startup, winning $200,000 and high-quality mentorship. Australian iWebgate was named best security SME, winning $300,000 and high-quality mentorship. 

5. Cyber Security Challenge 2010 

The second annual Cyber Security Challenge 2010 was sponsored industry leaders BAE Systems and Accenture.

The winner, Masking Networks, received $10,000USD cash prize and mentorship from Accenture                                                 

6. Cloud Security Challenge 2010

The first ever Cloud Security Challenge sought radically new ideas and game-changing solutions from around the world that make cloud computing more secure.

The Cloud Security Challenge was sponsored by HP labs and partnered by  Cloud Security Alliance, SecurityVibes and CloudSecurity.org.

CloudSwitch won the Cloud Security Challenge, receiving a $10,000 prize fund and mentorship from CapGemini. CloudSwitch also won the opportunity to showcase at the 2010 Global Security Challenge Summit.

 7. The Security Technologies of Tomorrow Challenge (2010)

The Security Technologies of Tomorrow Challenge was open to security startups, but restricted to previous GSC finalists. Sponsored by CNI Expo, this competition brought together the best entrants from previous challenges to compete against each other for the title of 'Best Security Technology of Tomorrow'.

This Challenge was won by SCIT Labs Inc , who received a $10,000 prize fund. Selected finalists also received a free booth ($1,500 value) and ticket to the 2010 CNI Expo.

8. Global Security Challenge 2008

The 4th annual GSC was supported by the Technical Support Working Group (TSWG), BAE Systems, Smiths Detection and Accenture

Adaptive Imaging Technologies was named most promising security startup, winning $200,000 and mentorship from Advent Venture Partners. Kromek was named best security SME, winning $300,000 and New Venture Partners.  Remedium Technologies was named most promising security startup, winning $10,000 and mentorship from the Civitas.

9. Global Security Challenge 2009

The first ever Cyber Security Challenge sough the world's most creative innovators developing responses to challenges to cyber security. Recognising that many disruptive innovations are not yet ready for mass commercialisation, judging favoured the disruptive potential technology over the idea's maturity. The 2009 Cyber Security Challenge was sponsored by BAE Systems.

The winner, Ksplice, received a £5,000 GBP cash award and mentorship by Nick Kingsbury (Venture Capitalist, former partner at 3i). Runners-up split a £4,000 prize fund. 

10. Crowded Places Challenge 2009 (INSTINCT Technology Demonstrator1)

The second ever Crowded Places Challenge was part of INSTINCT's Technology Demonstrator 1. INSTINCT is a cross-departmental programme led by the Office for Security and Counter Terrorism. Technology Demonstrators are programmes designed to seek out, test and showcase new technologies.

TD1 focused on crowded places, aiming to improve our ability to understand and model crowd behaviour by uncovering creative innovations to help counter terrorism. TD1 was led by BAE Systems' Detica, with OmniCompete providing competition support.

The winner, iOmniscient,  received a £10,000 cash award and mentorship by Matt McCooe, Managing Director of Chart Venture Partners.

11. Global Security Challenge 2008

The 3rd annual GSC was supported by the Technical Support Working Group (TSWG)  and Accenture.

TRX Systems was named most promising startup, receiving $500,000, and  HOMErgent was named most promising security idea, winning $10,000.

12. crowded Places Challenge Challenge 2008

The first ever Crowded Places Challenge aimed to improve our ability to understand and model crowd behaviour. It was sponsored by Secure FuturesCrowd Vision was named the winner, receiving $10,000.

13. Global Security Challenge 2007

The 2nd annual GSC was supported by the Technical Support Working Group (TSWG). Noble Peak Vision was named most promising security startup, receiving $500,000.

14. Global Security Challenge 2007

The first ever GSC aimed to find and reward the most innovative security startup. Ingenia Technology was named the winner, receiving $10,000.
